Tomorrow Teaching a colored colored pencil workshop

I have spent the morning getting things ready for  a colored pencil workshop at White Pine Bookstore.
I have been teaching several classes each month for over a year now have had the best of students and really learn a lot from them and their questions, makes me think about why I do different things in art my way. I have spent all of my life painting and drawing, teaching myself how different mediums work, how to shade, how colors will blend and what works and why it doesn't work.
My life has been a fun trip, I am now in my 70's my body knows it but somehow my mind still thinks young.
I am still learning..

Scratch-board colored with my Wacom tablet.

I started Teaching myself about 25 years ago how to print after getting disgusted with the run of printing people the world had to offer, last time I had something printed was by a company that had  high recommendations, horse feathers! I was there to proof and this printer had opposite images over top of each other, hmmm now even I knew this would blow the color in one image if you changed it in the other. Well I fussed all the way home till my hubby said when you get home "I want to order that Epson printer and do you own printing". I'm here to tell you as soon as we got home I was on the computer doing just that.  Well, then I had to learn Photoshop. The best move I ever made.

I have had ball with my art and made a decent living and hope I still have years to go with my teaching and art. I have my own line of Note-cards which I paint, print,  cut, fold and package my-self. More later stay tuned..Kay Murphy-Wallace 2016

Seascape finished for acrylic workshop

Acrylic seascape finished for my acrylic workshop at White Pine Bookstore, July 12 and  July 19.
It has been a while since I painted a seascape, I used to be the biggest beach bum, spent my every week-end and vacation at the beach, just walking the beach early mornings collecting seashells, fishing or laying in the sun, oh well my younger days. Long gone...but memories are still there.

Be a unique artist

Two of my new "Birds In Hats" series, I have went a step further by embossing my note cards after printing them. Sometimes I think I do more labor on them than I can get money for them. Luckily at shows the buying public has not felt that way so extra time and patience has paid off. I use colored pencils to create the design, scan the original, set up the note card, print, cut and fold, then emboss. Makes me tired writing about it.  Grateful for the creative/artist side that makes me go one step more to be able to produce a better and different kind of art. I love it when I can do something unique and different.
I think that's the name of the game is to create your own brand of art in your own way, try unusual styles to see what sticks, get the name for being unique in your art (original) not a copy of someone else.

Tips on learning to draw

Suggestions on learning to draw
Carry a camera and a sketch book the book does not have to big just so you jot down ideas, colors and etc.
Get a book bag to carry your supplies in.
Pencils woodless will work well, a eraser, ink pen ( micron 005 is a great drawing pen) 05 for a technical pencil,x-acto knife to sharpen your woodless pencil. They tend to lose a point easily.   Most of all have fun.

These birds have been a fun series, that I'm not finished yet..I am usually so in to realism, guess old age brings back the fun of painting. I can now paint what I want, instead wondering if this will sell at the shows. Takes a load off and brings the fun part back...
